Abstract   Eighty-three breast cancer tissues were analysed their estrogen receptor status(ER) using both dextran coated charcoal assay(DCC) and immunohistachemical assay(ICA). The ER status of these patients were evaluated in respect to age, size of tumor, and axillary lymphnode metastasis according to each method. The number of ER positive tumor was 53 cases(57%) in ER-ICA and 33 cases(40%) in DCC assay. There was no correlation between ER- status and age of patients in ER-ICA, to the contrary there was significant increase of ER positive tumor in the group over age 50 in DCC assay (p<0.05). The positive ratio was 34% under the age 50, and 45k in more than age 50. The relationship between tumor size and ER was not proven by ER-ICA but there was significant decrease of ER positive ratio in tumors smaller than 2 cm in DCC assay, from 42%( 2 cm) to 28%(<2cm). When we analysed the involvement of axi11ary lymphnodes, there was remarkable decrease to 30% in the cases of more than 6 lymphnodes involved patients by DCC assay. In this study, the results of ER-ICA and DCC assay showed correlation in 57 cases(69%) and the DCC assay was more correlated with other prognostic factors.
